For their typically compact and lightweight design, cross line laser levels are portable, hence the convenience of taking them around. To top it over, the best thing about having crossline lasers is their steady laser beams, which contribute significantly to the high accuracy of the device.

With that being said, having a cross line laser is great, but finding the right tool is not. With plenty of options available when it comes to power tools, getting the best cross-line laser level might be a daunting task, as you’d need to sort through information, specifications, and cross-line laser level reviews. Don’t sweat it! We’re here to help. We’ve prepared an in-depth buying guide to help you get the right laser level for the right work. Take a look at the article below.

Buying Guide - How to Buy The Best Cross Line Laser Level

We have gathered here some features you should take into careful consideration before making your purchase.

Leveling Mechanism

There are two types of leveling mechanisms in laser levels nowadays, manual leveling and self leveling.

Manual leveling requires users to manually adjust the device to the built-in bubble vials or thumbscrews. Though it is still possible for them to get high accuracy, they easily lose their level. Hence, you’d need to be really careful not to bump or move the tripod to avoid inaccurate readings.

Meanwhile, a self-leveling laser level can relevel itself either electrically or automatically. If the electrical leveling laser level features electronic servo motors and gears that can level the device, each automatic self-leveling laser has an internal pendulum to detect the level for you. With the best self-leveling laser level, you’ll be able to achieve a much higher level of accuracy, compared to the other manual-leveling laser levels.

Range

This feature indicates how far the laser beams that the device projects can be seen. A longer working range means higher accuracy in measuring. In this way, the working range plays a very important factor in laser levels. The average instruments often provide the capability of approximately 100 feet, while the best laser level for builders can work much further, which might be up to 300 feet or beyond.

With that being said, despite the higher precision over long distances, laser levels with extended working ranges are often expensive. Thus, you should consider the requirements of your upcoming applications. It is highly advisable to pick a laser level that comes with a slightly more extensive range than your needs. In this way, you’d be able to tackle various laser levels without having to get many different types of laser levels.

Accuracy of the laser beams

This accuracy feature shows users to which extent the device can get close to the level at a specific distance. Typically, laser levels feature an average accuracy of 1/4 or 1/8 inch. Sometimes, the best laser level can project bright and sharp laser lines with an impressive 1/32-inch accuracy, making it especially ideal for construction work.

When it comes to measuring tools, accuracy is always the most crucial factor as it decides whether you’d get neat and flawlessly aligned applications. Make sure you check the accuracy of the laser beams every time you get a new laser level.

Battery Life

Another essential factor when it comes to laser levels is battery life. There are many different types of laser levels on the market nowadays, but there are two primary power sources in laser levels: Alkaline battery and Li-Ion battery. If you prefer a long runtime with no interruption, you should pick a top-rated cross-line laser level with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery. Rechargeable batteries will allow you to have a convenient working by just charging the device prior to the applications. You will no longer have to worry about any downtime due to battery drain, or about finding a replacement in the middle of the work.

Durability

When it comes to laser levels, you will notice there is always an IP rating featured in a tool. An IP rating is the index of Ingress Protection Rating, which shows users the extent of protection that the device can provide against dust and water. The higher the IP rating is, the more durable that tool is.

Along with a rugged design to cope with drops, the tool should be water and dustproof to allow users to work comfortably under any job site condition, even if it is hazardous.

Typically, the best cross line laser level will offer the greatest protection, ensuring correct and accurate readings, even after drops of water splashed.

Beams colors

Laser levels come with two color options, either red or green lasers. Though it might seem like an important factor, the beam colors, in fact, affect the laser level quality a lot.

On the one hand, red beams are adequately visible, especially indoors, but they are never as sharp and crisp as green lasers. However, laser levels with red lasers have the advantage of being much more expensive and more energy-efficient.

On the other hand, green laser levels project green lasers, which are basically 4x brighter than those with red laser beams, creating bright and very high-quality reference laser lines. Almost all the laser tools for construction nowadays feature green laser beams for maximum visibility.

While green laser levels overall will be a more excellent option for professional works and outdoor applications, red beams with a more economical price are ideal for homeowners and DIY enthusiasts.
