replacing diacritic signs

#1 Post by northernmosthamburg » 18.01.2021, 19:42

Hello

How can I search and replace diacritic signs for a big subfolder structure: The file manager shows me often identical files. One file has an diacritic sign like what´s and the wiew is whats for both. Under DOS with command

Code: Select all

DIR > export.txt
I have a what?s in notepad view:
D:\00-RockPop\10-Sampler\88-Diverse\cant get you out of my head.mp3
D:\00-RockPop\10-Sampler\88-Diverse\can?t get you out of my head.mp3
It´s not a solution to search for the "?", because it´s getting substitute with the used notepad codepage.

With the file managers quick search:
If I use quick search for
can
I get two entries:
cant get you out of my head.mp3
cant get you out of my head.mp3

If I use quick search for
cant
I get one entrie:
cant get you out of my head.mp3

Michael,
If you are seeing two files with the exact same name in the same folder (which is impossible), then one of the files has an "invisible" character.

Select the file in question.
Press F2
Press the left cursor key to move the cursor to the beginning of the file name.
Press the right cursor key to move the cursor right, one character at a time.
Once you get to the place where the invisible character is, it will appear as if the cursor didn't move (taking your example above, it will appear to stay between the n and the t).
(Sometimes there will be more than one invisible character, taking your example above, press the right cursor key until the cursor passes the t. Press the left cursor key once, then follow the instructions below accordingly.)
Press and hold the Shift key and press the left cursor key to mark the invisible character(s).
Press Crtl+Insert (Strg+Einfg on a German keyboard) to copy the invisible character.
Press Crtl+F to open the Search UI.
In the search field press Shift+Insert to insert the invisible character.
To replace the invisible character, insert desired replacement in the appropriate field.
Start search/replace.

Let me know if you have succeeded.
Best regards

thx for your help.

The problem is generate with exchange between several linux distributions and windows. I have overtake theese files many years ago.
Additional hint is:
notepad++ shows the sign
canBPHt get you out of my head.mp3
If I copy paste this string here in this post we all see this:
can‚t get you out of my head.mp3
I found a hint regarding BPH = "break permitted here" under:
https://community.notepad-plus-plus.org ... ckground/2
Now I can mark this posted sign and can search / replace for this (search don´t show a sign > blank) but I can solve my problem.

have a nice day,
Michael
