Hi everyone,
Is it possible to batch move files to different subfolders ?
For example, say I have the following files :
.../Photos/2017 01 01/photo001.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01/photo002.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01/photo003.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01/photo004.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01/photo005.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01/photo006.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01/photo001.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01/photo002.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01/photo003.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01/photo004.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01/photo005.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01/photo006.jpg
and that I want to move the first 6 to a subfolder called "2017 01" and the last 6 to "2017 02" (basically, move file X to the subfolder called the first 7 letters of the name of file X).
Is this possible ?
I thought it might work using multi-rename, by renaming to "[n,0,7]/[n]" but that actually does not work - multi-rename doesn't allow slashes in the names...
Thanks in advance !
Arthur
Batch move files to different subfolders
Re: Batch move files to different subfolders
BAsed on this example, the only thing you would have to do is to rename 2 folders:
- Rename \Photos\2017 01 01\ to: \Photos\2017 01\
- Rename \Photos\2017 02 01\ to: \Photos\2017 02\
That can be done manually or with the Multi rename tool:
- Rename \Photos\2017 01 01\ to: \Photos\2017 01\
- Rename \Photos\2017 02 01\ to: \Photos\2017 02\
That can be done manually or with the Multi rename tool:
- Go to the Photos folder
- Select both the 2017 xx 01 folders
- Start multirename tool
- Set Filename to [n7] (=first 7 characters of the fodlername)
- Rename and done ..
Re: Batch move files to different subfolders
Thanns for your reply.
Yes sorry, there is more to it, my example is not well specified. What I meant is that I have the following files all in .../Photos :
.../Photos/2017 01 01 photo001.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01 photo002.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01 photo003.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01 photo004.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01 photo005.jpg
.../Photos/2017 01 01 photo006.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01 photo001.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01 photo002.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01 photo003.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01 photo004.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01 photo005.jpg
.../Photos/2017 02 01 photo006.jpg
And I would like them to be automatically sorted into subfolders by month.
Any way to do THIS ?
Thanks,

Ah, now things are more clear
In that case, you were on the right track; try it with:
Main difference: you were using a "/" instead of a "\". Don't mix those up!
(Or maybe you like this one better?)
(Sorry; it seems I'm not allowed to upload screenshots here ...)
In that case, you were on the right track; try it with:
Code: Select all
[N1-7]\[N]
(Or maybe you like this one better?)
Code: Select all
[N1-7]\[N11-]
