View tree ---> FC crashing

#1 Post by rik103 » 21.04.2015, 13:18

Please suggest a fix.
When activating folders tree (alt+t) FC crashing. Sometimes if FC closed with tree activated, it won't start after, so need to change ShowTree to 0.
FC does not write a report for this crashes.... Marek suggested to switch Tools>Settings>View>Tree>Management (tab) to drive, but that is not what I need. I want to see windows tree. Thx

I too had the same problem. I have enjoyed using FC, then XE for many years with separate trees set to 'computer' in both panels. A few days ago it persistently crashed on starting without any obvious cause. I uninstalled, cleaned the registry and installed FreeCommander XE 2015 Build 685 32-bit public. This started OK but crashed on attempting to display the tree.
Switching Tools>Settings>View>Tree>Management (tab) to 'drive' has fixed it.

Running under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, SP1.

I too had the same problem.
Can you open the Setings->Tree: Color/Font/Icons tab? Can you see the tree on that tab?
Can you check your Windows Events for some error messages if no crash report will be created from FC?

The tree is visible on the Settings->Tree: Color/Font/Icons tab, with five entries: Desktop, Libraries, my user name, Computer and Network.
In the tab I can expand the Libraries, my user name and Network entries, but FC crashes if I try to expand the Computer entry.
This is from the Windows event log:

Please check at path "C:\Program Files (x86)\FreeCommander XE" if you have filename, similar to "bugreport.txt". If you have such a file, e-mail it to Marek.

There is no file 'bugreport.txt' or similar in 'C:\Program Files (x86)\FreeCommander XE'.

Ask Google for "ntdll.dll exception 0xc0000374" and you will see many hints.
Very often it is the problem with installed shell extension.
You could try the System File Checker https://support.microsoft.com/de-de/kb/929833/en-us with the command "sfc /SCANNOW".

I used ShellExView to disable all non-Microsoft shell extensions, then restarted FCXE.
After changing the tree setting to 'computer', FC crashed as before on clicking the tree display icon.
Running 'sfc /scannow' did not reveal any system problems.

Not tree related, but XE 687 and 694 were regularly crashing after June Windows update (8.1 Pro x64). "sfc /scannow" seems to have fixed it.
