right-click context menu appears only after big delay in XE 2018 build 770 and 780

#1 Post by socky » 07.09.2018, 13:11

Hello,

thanks so much for this great tool.

I found that beginning with version XE 2018 32bit build 770, the right-click context menu appears only after quite a big delay when clicking on files. When clicking on white space, FreeCommander's own context menu appears after a regular delay of at most 1 second (even less when FcContextMenu64.exe has been loaded).

This happens again in build 780 and in the current beta, but not qhen reverting to build 740 (here, the context menu for files appears very slightly more slowly than in Windows Explorer).

The affected system is Windows 7 Pro SP1 64bit. It doesn't seem to affect FreeCommander on Windows 10 Pro 1803 64bit.

I hope this helps in making FreeCommander even better!

Best regards.

Does the issue exist when you right-click in Windows Explorer?

Sorry, I've not made myself clear enough.
Approximate response times of the right-click context menu when clicking on files or folders:
  • Windows Explorer: almost immediately
  • FC build 740: ~1 second
  • FC build 770/780 beta: ~10 seconds if FcContextMenu64.exe is not running (100% load on 1 CPU core during that time), ~3..5 seconds otherwise
This seems independent from the type or content of the right-clicked file or folder.

Have you tried to deactivate your AV program for testing?

Yes, I did. Also, I stopped all other non-essential tasks and ran FC build 740 and 770 back to back. Result: the context menu of 770 and 780 is very noticeably slower than that of 740.
Must be something else in my particular system, if nobody else experiences that.

The same happens on a Win 10 pro machine.

In File Explorer - almost instantly.
In FC 770 - Even 1 minute in some cases.

When I right click in FC 770 - the Windows Defender kicks into gear and starts using about 20-25% of the CPU.

It worked fine until about 1 week ago so I suppose it has something to do with the Windows Defender.

Well, if it's Windows Defender that takes 25% CPU load, it looks to me like it's scanning the clicked file and using one of your presumably four cores entirely. Does this happen with FC build 740, too (without changing anything else)?
If so, I would say it's unrelated to my original report. For me, it's FreeCommander's own "FcContextMenu64.exe" that uses the CPU and takes its sweet time. With or without anti virus running.

Have you tried FcContextMenu64.exe from the version 740 to use in 770 or 780?

I did now, and it resolved the issue: the context menu in FC build 780 beta is just as fast as in build 740 if I copy FcContextMenu64.exe from 740's into 780's folder (replacing the existing file).

Is this acceptable as a workaround, compatibility-wise?
Generally, I would rather not tamper with an application's files. But if you, Marek, as the developer, say it's fine, it puts me at ease.

Reinstalling 770 solved the issue.

Thanks!
