Free Commander recognized as malware

#1 Post by Fubar » 03.10.2009, 04:46

Hi to everyone!

Just want to inform you that Microsoft Security Essentials (new Microsoft freeware antimalware software) detects the Trojan Horse TrojanClicker:Win32/Yabector.A in Free Commander instalation file.

There are more information on Microsoft Malware Protection Center but I can not post link to the page because do not have 2 posts.

Obviously it is not false alarm and the detection is related to eBay shortcut.

MSE will be very popular antimalware tool, so this issue could stop many, many users to download and use Free Commander.

Thanks and sorry for bad English.

I downloaded fc_setup_.zip from page
www dot freecommander dot com / fc_downl_en.htm on 2009-03-01.
File size was: 2.444.718 MD5:9AE3E6B60971D3DB331E269A2522EEB6

I downloaded fc_setup_.zip from page
www dot freecommander dot com / fc_downl_en.htm on 2009-10-03 (today)
File size was: 2.474.531 MD5:695FF8CCA67F0F5D554D6AA2CC48E46B

The version (2009.02) did not change in spite of the changes.

What is more problematic: judgement of www dot virustotal dot com
of fc_setup.exe (included in .zip) 1/39 in first case and
6/41 in the second case.
It think some kind of malware may get in the package fc_setup_.zip

Also see this thread. Some AV and malware-hunting software have poor definitions, too broad based. I can scan all my files with ClamWin, with a fresh database, and turn up nothing. If I used one of the more popular AVs, I would lose some useful software. So I take it all with a grain of salt.

I found this virus too when I scanned my fc copies from a couple months ago with MS security essentials.

Can someone make it clear whether it is a virus, or a false alarm? It sure looks like a virus.

And if it is a virus how did it get in there? Is it removed from the current fc?

There is no virus in FreeCommander, please re-download it. Always download FC from the FreeCommander homepage to make sure it's clean.

Part of my question was whether there was a virus in fc until recently?

I'm asking because I did get a major virus a while ago and as far as I can tell it came from fc. It seemed to have something to do with the ebay link. It's good if it's been fixed since then...but I want to try to figure out what happened with my system.

I have only ever downloaded fc from this website.

I'm not the author, but AFAIK, there was no virus in FC, only that eBay link.
