Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ext)
Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ext)
Hi
I am new to FC and I like it, I use it as replacement of other 2 window explorer. What I am missing is to display file names as separately file_name and in other column extension. So I could sort by extension. I know that I can sort by TYPE (file type) but sometimes extension sorting order differs from file type order..... And I got used to see extension not after filename....
Is it possible to display file exnension in different coulmn?
Thanks in advance
Tom

Re: Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ext)
Hi
Ok, I managed to get columns I want, but in column "extension" there is dot "." before extension, and what's more filename still contains extension - I thought that activating extension column will remove extension from filename....
Any chances to get that right?
Regards,
Tom

Re: Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ext)
I think to stop showing the extension on the filename, the only way is to open Windows Explorer, menu Tools >> Folder Options >> View >>> checkmark "Hide Extensions for Known File Types".
I don't know of any way to stop the dot from showing on the extension in the Extensions column, maybe one of the wise gurus will know a way.

granny
Unfortunately, checking/unchecking "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" doesn't work in FreeCommander (filename still contains .extension), though it works in Windows Explorer....
Anybody tried to figure it out?
Thanks in advance,
Tok

Re: Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ext)
pc131, I'm so sorry.
I always have extensions turned on in Explorer, but I do have a memory that with FreeCommander version from 2007, when I turned off extensions in Explorer, it did affect FC also.
I don't know if I'm having a wrong memory, or if FC works differently for that in version 2009-02. I will have to try out my old version of FC tonight when I get home.

Nobody able to help? Maybe request that in new version - no extension in filename, when extension in separate column and removing dot from extension...???

Which other explorers do you use ?pc131 wrote:I am new to FC and I like it, I use it as replacement of other 2 window explorer.
... just curious ...
Re: Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ext)
I use on another personal computer TC from g_h_i_s_l_e_r (I meant 2 window exploer - explorer with 2 windows/panels)
Re: Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ext)
I've never understood why anyone would want it like that. It's hard enough for me to see what I need without putting another column in the way. (I need a large font)
Windows Vista 64-bit
Pentium E5200 Dual Core 2.5GHz

Re: Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ext)
pc131, I guess I was having a bad memory. I must have been thinking of some other file manager (I trialed several different ones before choosing FreeCommander.)
I'm sorry for giving bad information
matera, I use huge fonts AND large DPI.
But I do often use an Extentions or FileType column, shrunk down to the narrowest possible width, just to use for sorting.
I keep extensions turned on always, old habit from working with video --- demuxing gives two identically named files for video and audio with the only difference in the extension. Computer gets cranky if you try to load a vid file into an audio editor!

Hey!
I am joining you gues with this issue. I want filename to contain no ".ext" too)

Re: Show extension in separate column (not like file_name.ex
I second both requests (file name without extensions and extensions without a leading dot).
