Sort by Name numeric ordering
Sort by Name numeric ordering
Free Commander version 2007.10a Windows XP SP2
When I sort a list by name either ascending or descending the listing isn't in pure numerical order with numbers in the file name. For example:
Fig 1-1
Fig 1-11
Fig 1-12
Fig 1-13
Fig 1-2
Fig 1-20
Fig 1-3
Fig 1-30
Ideally it should sort as:
Fig 1-1
Fig 1-2
Fig 1-3
Fig 1-11
Fig 1-12
Fig 1-13
Fig 1-20
Fig 1-30
This has stopped me from completely adoting what is otherwise a far superior file manager than the standard windows one (which sorts numbers correctly).

Hello,
Extras >> Settings >> View >> Sorting
What you call "correct sorting" is mathematical sorting of filenames with numbers (in FC called natural sorting). This is a feature of explorer since Win XP.
A filename with numbers is not really a number; an "correct" sorting is alphabetically. But you're right that its easier with "narural sorting".

Thanks ralfso, couldn't find anything in the help or forums. Guess it isn't a bug or issue Now I have no reason to use the native Xp file managerralfso wrote:Hello,

Re: Sort by Name numeric ordering
In windows 8, you need first to do this
1) windows key + R (will open the "run dialog")
2) gpedit.msc
3) In the left pane, User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer (Windows 7) or File Explorer (Windows
4) in the right pane, double lick on "turn off numerical sorting in file explorer"
5) click on "disabled"
6) ok

Re: Sort by Name numeric ordering
See no problems in FC XE 674 (but it was in program for long time). So you should upgrade to XE version.
You'll see that all items are sorted as you wished.
Tools - Settings... - View - File/folder list - Tab Sorting - from drop down list select "Natural sorting (as Explorer)"Ideally it should sort as:
Fig 1-1
Fig 1-2
Fig 1-3
Fig 1-11
Fig 1-12
Fig 1-13
Fig 1-20
Fig 1-30

Re: Sort by Name numeric ordering
The problem is solved, he found the place where to switch the view to "natural sorting" in the old FC.
For the new FCXE it is at settings >>> View >>> File/Folder list >>> Sorting
