How to Rename Extension of Group of Files
Posted: 10.04.2016, 22:54
I recently discovered that someone had been posting scans
(of old fiction magazines) in a comic-book format (cbz)
that contain jpg images with the extension misnamed.
Cbz files are basically zip archives with the extension
renamed to 'cbz' to enable them to be opened and read
with a comic book reader program, such as CDisplay.
Anyhow, these cbz contain extra files used only on
Mac computers and cause problems for Windows software,
preventing them from working, but also each image file
is incorrectly named with the 'png' extension, even
though they are jpg images, NOT png images (a totally
different format).
Another member of the group figured this out, and Irfanview
confirmed it.
So I thought I'd use FreeCommander to batch rename
the extensions from .png to .jpg and correct them
(after extracting them with Winrar).
First I found out that the Help file used by
my version, 2009.02b of FreeCommander, is missing,
and none of the download options contained the help file
(so I reinstalled it for nothing). Where is the missing
help file?
I downloaded a copy of the latest version with help
file from a mirror site; however, the information
is incomprehensible.
I found no easy example for what could done in DOS:
REN *.png *.jpg
In the past I'd been using ACDSee, but when renaming
in batch mode, the creation date is altered, changed
to the current date.
I was hoping that my normally handy FreeCommander
wouldn't do that, but I can't figure out how to work it.
How is this kind of change done?
Does it retain the existing creation date if it works?
Any help would be appreciated.
