After being puzzled for several days, I just figured out: this setting causes one to lose the ability to right-click and get the context menu for files. FAIL!

I'd suggest:
NC-Mode (sticky selection)
(win10pro x64) - (latest FCXE x64 portable)

Just hold the right mouse button down for more than 2 seconds.

Perfect! That does the trick. Thank-you very much!

QUESTION: Where is this in the documentation? If it's not there, how on earth did you discover this?

Please add a Check box Selection Column, you have promised this feature a while back,we have been waiting for a long time.
Is this too difficult task. I know this is not common, but what do you think the time line is for this, if any, so i can know if i should look for another manager. if it is coming soon then i can stick around. not having this feature is a real inconvenience. If i am not mistaken, all of the other major file managers have this feature,including the worthless Microsoft Windows explorer.

NC-Mode (sticky selection)
Works fine, except when right click hold and drag : FAIL

but is works in a pinch, however, the best solution is a check box

Thanks

What do you mean? You can disable "select with right mouse button", then drag and drop should work.

You can use also the ini options to select/unselect item with the left mouse button, on icon or/and extension.
Dreamer wrote:It's just a workaround, but you can use these ini options, define directly in the [Form] section of the freecommander.ini file:

SelectLeftClickOnIcon=2

0 - open (default)
1- focus
2- select

Or/and:

SelectLeftClickOnEmptyCaption=2

SelectLeftClickOnIcon is for the file icon, SelectLeftClickOnEmptyCaption for extension or end of the folder name, both are very useful, first is close to what you want, if you select the item, the item color is changed, so you can see the items that are selected. Use number 2 for this option.

Another option, focus (number 1) is useful when using single click to open file/folder, you can just focus the item, with single click - by clicking on item icon or extension.

You can combine these options as you wish, e.g. select clicking the icon, focus clicking the extension, or vice versa, or just one of these options...

I use it sometimes if I can use just one hand, it's easier to create shortcut or move, if default operation for left button is copy - but I don't use right button to select, mainly because of context menu, I use it often.

Left button select is better, faster, it's possible to select multiple item holding the mouse button and drag - and select additional items without losing the previous selection.

The "checkbox" selection method suggested by the OP would be a nice addition to FCXE. But I was wondering about the possibility of adding yet another file-selection method.

I have a friend who refuses to really try FCXE because he can't make it work like his (admittedly archaic) current file manager. That program uses "sticky" selection, but it works differently than FCXE's NC-Mode. The program is configured so that all file [de-]selection, including multi-select, is done using the left mouse button... no need to use Shift/Ctrl, or to use the right mouse button like NC-Mode.

The way it works is, left-clicking (once) on an item selects it if it's not, deselects if it is already selected. Clicking and dragging up or down toggles the select state of multiple files/folders at once (if they are unselected it selects them, if selected they become deselected). Basically, it's like "painting" the select state. Files/folders remain selected until deselected ("sticky"), or until the user navigates to another folder.

Double-clicking on any file still launches all "selected" files using the usual file-type associations for each.

Drag-and-drop cannot be used to copy/move files/folders while the program is configured for this selection mode, but then my friend never uses drag-and-drop anyway.

How feasible would it be to add this to FCXE?
