Alternative ways for file list background color

#1 Post by Dreamer » 22.12.2017, 22:28

Different file list background color if quick filter/plain view/selected only option is active is useful, but it would be nice to have an alternative option, for these options and for some others.
It would be useful also if 2 or more options are activated in the same time, currently just one background color can be used.

1) Status bar state indicator: [state] (with different font color by default)
Show the indicator in the status bar, if some of these options are enabled:
- quick filter
- plain view
- selected only
- show hidden items
- file container
- archive (content of the archive file)

Show the indicator only if one or more of these items are activated.

2) Status bar state indicator - one letter: [state] (with different font color by default)
Show the indicator in the status bar, if some of these options are enabled:
- quick filter (F)
- plain view (P)
- selected only (S)
- show hidden items (H)
- file container (C)
- archive (content of the archive file) (A)

Show the indicator only if one or more of these items are activated.

3) Title bar state indicator - one letter: [state] (similar as #2)
Show the indicator in the status bar, if some of these options are enabled:
- quick filter (F)
- plain view (P)
- selected only (S)
- show hidden items (H)
- file container (C)
- archive (content of the archive file) (A)

Show the indicator only if one or more of these items are activated.

I'm just not sure if the indicator should be shown if hidden items are enabled, or if disabled, for some users it's normal that hidden items are disabled, for some other users it's normal that hidden items are enabled.

4) Address bar / toolbar button(s) / letter(s) of the state.
Show the indicator icon/letter in the address bar, if some of these options are enabled:
- quick filter (F)
- plain view (P)
- selected only (S)
- show hidden items (H)
- file container (C)
- archive (content of the archive file) (A)

Show the indicator only if one or more of these items are activated.

No no no

A status bar bearing all kinds of such items should be always visible. [Preferably at the bottom, near the Quick Filter, so that it would not take away any of precious usable space?] So that it would always indicate what is and what is not turned on

1-2 letters would denote item / mode; a greyed out would mean lack / inactivity. Plus after hovering over it there could be a balloon that would explain that for example H stands for hidden and so on; or a pop out after clicking it

I think the status bar is the best for displaying the indicators and now I suggest to use the color scheme colors for the square background, so it would be also intuitive - useful if another panel is active, or/and if more modes are used.

I'm not sure about background color for some indicators:
- "archive content" - perhaps this one is not even needed, but if yes, I don't know which color should be used
- "file container" color from "Active file container tab" - background start color could be used, it's used in all my color schemes, I'm using orange color, which is not used for other modes, perhaps orange color could be added also for default white and default dark grey color schemes
- "Hidden items" (should include also the system items) - not sure if needed either, if yes, I thought about some semi-grey color, but then it could be similar as if this option is disabled

Regarding the letter font color, the color from active panel file list font color should be used, so it will be good readable, for inactive items perhaps "read-only" color, which is available in most color schemes and it's different than standard font color.

Perhaps it looks quite complex, but good colors should be used, so it will be really intuitive.
In some very dark color schemes the special colors are dark, so perhaps a border would be useful.
If the colors from color scheme files can't be used, some default color scheme colors could be used.

Important option should be "Hide inactive mode indicators".
Useful option would be a tooltip with the mode name, state (enabled/disabled), and the assigned shortcut.

Indicators could be used as buttons, so it will be possible to easily toggle any mode, but this is not so important.

EDIT: If it's too complicated to implement soon, workaround solution could be the suggestion above:
3) Title bar state indicator - one letter: [state] (similar as #2)
Show the indicator in the status bar, if some of these options are enabled:
- quick filter [F]
- plain view [P]
- selected only [S|
- show hidden items [H]
- file container [C]
- archive (content of the archive file) [A]

Show the indicator only if one or more of these items are activated.
By "items" I mean options/modes, e.g. if plain view is enabled, shot "[P]" in the status bar, it plain view is disabled, don't show it, but if possible, perhaps grey item [P] could be shown, but it should be possible to hide it by option. It could be with a tooltip, if possible.

Alternative solution could be using real toolbar buttons next to the quick filter, it would be like real status bar toolbar, where we could add/remove buttons, even the quick filter could be a "button", so we could move it left or right.

In this case there could be the option to show the buttons only if the mode is enabled, so it would be more just indicators - or they could be just icons, not real buttons, to indicate that mode is activated, with tooltip, if possible.
