This Delphi version seems planned for 2009. Thus let us be patient

Unicode support absolutely needed

#19 Post by 1uMJ6p » 20.03.2009, 12:46

Dear Marek,

I was using FC for a while until I noticed it doesn´t support unicode. I have stopped using it now, and it´s really a great pity because FC is a good piece of software. But today´s usability requirements to any piece of software is unicode support, so it is a must, especially in business area where ppl have to exchange files over continents.

Thanks for your attention and cheers.

so... what is the best guess that unicode will be supported? Top priority for me, right now I keep switching to windows explorer  when I need to operate on files that have special characters in their name

But you can't please all of the people all of the time. Implementing Unicode support these days usually means that Win98 drops out of the other end. Yes there is Unicows for Win98 but somehow the compilers that implement unicode don't make it work. Well, there are other small problems with FC and Win98 (FTP implementation), so it is probably time to move on anyway.

I totally understand what you mean by pleasing all of the people at the same time :)
However in this case, I think there are many more people that need UTF-8 and very few people that are still using win98

No, I'm not getting grumpy about it. Life is full of choices, and as one of my choices was to do other things rather than becoming competent at programming file managers, the necessary consequence is that I can only use what other people program. Fair enough!

Hello,

I registered in this forum just to cast one more vote in favour of Unicode support. I installed FreeCommander yesterday (Explorer seems to crash every time I enter a directory) and FC works like a charm! It makes me remember good ol' ms-dos days in a way. I'm fond of FC. Now, Unicode is a requisite to me as many filenames are in Unicode format (non Latin) characters... This is a big problem because I cannot use FC as much and as frequently as I'd like and personally I am not much keen on TC. FC is free after all. So my congratulations to FC author and wish Unicode support asap so that I can come to use FC again.

Greetings,

thanks for this great software. i am new to the forums, so hello to everyone, also.

unicode -- this is definitely the main reason i signed up was to request this, along with sftp, though this is a lot more important of the 2. i work with a lot of files and folders that need many different alphabets.

thanks so much for all of the effort in this great software.

Unicode will be a significant feature for the users of non-English country. Please try to implement it.

Thx
