Feature-Request: Support HEIF/HEIC Files for EXIF Informations (Rename) and viewer

#1 Post by Mr-Fly » 26.04.2020, 13:38

Hi,

It would be great if FC would support HEIF/HEIC Files
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Effi ... ile_Format
It would help a lot in the rename, as these also have EXIF Informations included.
Additionally it would be great if the viewer would support these formats.

Regards
Thorsten

Yes, you should add the extensions .heif and .heic in the filed "as Image" or "as Windows preview": https://freecommander.com/fchelpxe/en/General5.html.

Not quite per this subject, but I had posted a similar feature request (in another thread here) a while back to include FLAC files (like MP3) for multi-rename.

FLAC tags are not ID3 format tags like are in MP3 files. FLAC tags are actually "Vorbis comment" format tags.

Precisely defined, and much like ID3 tags in that the benefit of having ID3 tag fields usable for multi-rename is exactly the same justification for why the matching fields in a FLAC tag should also be usable for multi-rename.

Since this current thread is talking about additional metadata (EXIF) from HEIF/HEIC possibly being usable for rename, I thought I'd bring up FLAC one more time as my own suggestion for a candidate "tag" to have its metadata fields usable for multi-rename identical in concept to how MP3 files and ID3 tags are also supported.

thanks.

Hello Marek,

Actually my windows was missing a second converter from microsoft.
Now the viewer shows the heic.

But one thing we lost in this discussion:
It would be great if the exif information included in the heic could be used in the rename dialog.
Right now all exif informations are empty and i cannot rename the heic by some exif parameters.
Why is this important:
My wife and I both export our pictures from the iphones. they are all now HEIC and with the latest windows 10 icloud sync, its only the heic, no jpg anymore.
when we want to join the pictures, the problem is, that the numbers are pretty often equal, eg. img_1234.heic from my device and same filename from hers.
Therefor I would like to add anything that identifies the pictures better. eg. Camera model (for my wife Xs, for me Xs Max).
That would help a lot.
I know I can convert all HEIC to jpg, but i would like to keep all of them, the heic and the jpg.
additionally I believe heic will get more and more important due to the change in sync method in the win10 appstore edition of the icloud sync.

Marek, perhaps it’s much better not to add supported extensions manually, but you, as developer, can enlarge the list of all supported extensions for all types of files in the next donor version of FC XE.

It was already done in the relase 818.
User with existing config need to remove all extension from the filed and type $init$, save settings, close and start program.

Many thanks! Extensions were added only for "as image" section.

By the way, $init$ doesn't work for "as text" section - after FC XE restart we still see $init$ in that section.

What about adding, for example, widely used office xml formats - LibreOffice (OpenOffice) file formats - ods (Calc), odp (Impress), odg (Draw), odf (Math), odb (Base) for the relevant section? Even MS Office can work with that file formats (some formats are supported only with additional plugins).

Any news on this? Would be really helpful if FC could support it.

In Viewer it is possible to see the EXIF info.
Please check https://freecommander.com/fchelpxe/en/MetadataExif.html
I tested now the HEIC file and it worked.

Hello Marek,

Thanks for the remind.
But it seems rather slow when used with a couple hundred files.
Is it possible that you call exiftool for each file?
I tested it with powershell and it worked a lot faster when putting more then one file into the query:
exiftool -j c:\myfolder
it produces a json output which was easy to handle in powershell.
Maybe you can enhance it in this way?

I made a quick check,
Using FC with exiftool for 36 images/movies took 45 Seconds.
Using Powershell and using exiftool -j (allfilenames) took only 5 seconds.
So there seems to be a large overhead calling it for each file (especially in the Multi-rename).

Marek any idea on this how you could also move to the multiple of xx images?
I have some folder with hundreds of pictures i want to rename, all only usable with exiftool.
Otherwise I will write a PS Script, but as said it would be a great enhancement and speed-gain.
