598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
As I remember in earlier versions, the New Folder box (shortcut F7) always started empty. Now in 598, it is prefilled with the name of whatever file or folder the highlight happens to be on. The only time it is empty is if the highlight is on the "Go To Parent" entry.
I think the current behavior is a bit confusing, and may possibly result in a error. It would be better to open as an empty box.

Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
confirmed, new folder via F7 is prefilled. (actually I don't think this is bad think, but rather than having the last created folder as an preset, I would prefer to see the date or date and time e.g. [2012-08-19] or [2012-08-19_20-12-55].
1. this does not happen when creating a new folder via RMB. (inconsistency)
2. when creating a new folder via RMB the dialog still displays "new file: Folder"
this bug has been reported already.

My personal preference is to leave the box empty, as in Windows Explorer.inglorious wrote:... I would prefer to see the date or date and time e.g. [2012-08-19] or [2012-08-19_20-12-55].

Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
it's not a bad idea to behave similar to WinExp. But as we have already a drop-down box,My personal preference is to leave the box empty, as in Windows Explorer.
why not include date/time there:
PS: 3. another reported bug not yet fixed: when new folder dialog is open, press ALT+TAB to focus another window then closing/accessing FC from the taskbar will not longer work.

Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
Actually, I've never noticed the dropdown arrow! And I didn't understand you would put the date-time there, not prefill the box with it. Thanks for clarifying.inglorious wrote:... But as we have already a drop-down box, why not include date/time there:
Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
Changes for the release 599
- the input box is empty
- the drop-down box has the following items: focused folder/file name, current date, curent date/time

Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
This is nice, but how many users will be using this useful feature?
There should be some advice on the dialog, at least the text hint:
"Use drop down menu for more options"
Perhaps the text is not perfect, any suggestions are welcome.
BTW I'd prefer another format for date/time:
12-09-2012 23-59-19
I miss also the old "New Folder" as option.
Why the New text dialog doesn't have the same options as New folder (focused folder/file name)?
Note: Moved to Beta Discussion.

Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
Thank you, Marek -- it works nicely for me.
I agree with Dreamer that many users (including myself before inglorious mentioned it in this thread) won't realize that there is a dropdown with options.

Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
yeah, very nice! I use the drop-down on a daily basis now.
I guess I found a bug/inconsistency though:
select a folder then press F7:
- previously selected folder, date, date time in drop-down available
select the same folder then RMB and create a folder:
- selected folder is missing!, date, date time in drop-down available

Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
In my opinion this is not a good idea because its only a text string which is used for the folder name and not a real date - so a senseful sorting by the name is quite impossible with this format.....Dreamer wrote: BTW I'd prefer another format for date/time:

You can impact the format. It is the same format as in dialog "Desktop Snapshot...".uwee wrote:In my opinion this is not a good idea because its only a text string which is used for the folder name and not a real date - so a senseful sorting by the name is quite impossible with this format.....Dreamer wrote: BTW I'd prefer another format for date/time:

Wow - that is really a very hidden setting
But its nice to have such an opportunity....

Wow is right! I never would have guesseduwee wrote:Wow - that is really a very hidden setting
Tools > Desktop Snapshot > File Name > ... > Timestamp Format
It's not intuitive that the New Folder name should depend on this buried setting for snapshot names. I suggest that the New Folder name use what is already specified in Settings > View > File/Folder List > Timestamp Format; that is a much closer conceptual relationship than with snapshots.
Desktop Snapshot could also use that same setting as the default format, with the option to modify it in the snapshot dialog (and the modification would be remembered for subsequent snapshots). I think most users have a preferred date-time format for general use, and would use it in every context including snapshots.
Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
Of course, the right format should be:uwee wrote:In my opinion this is not a good idea because its only a text string which is used for the folder name and not a real date - so a senseful sorting by the name is quite impossible with this format.....Dreamer wrote: BTW I'd prefer another format for date/time:

Right, I don't like such hidden features, this one is also not intuitive and only few users know about it.It's not intuitive that the New Folder name should depend on this buried setting for snapshot names.
Anyway, I think the default format should be changed the way I have suggested above (my first example was wrong because of double 12 in date, it's another reason why separators and 4 digits for year should be used).
Re: 598 New Folder box (F7) is prefilled
I don't know what the default time format is in FC with a fresh ini file; perhaps it depends on the format set in Windows date and time?
In any case, it would be straightforward and transparent if the format (whether default or user-defined) for all date-times in FC were determined by Settings > View > File/Folder List > Timestamp Format. Set it once, and get it everywhere. (Note my comment above that this might be overridden for snapshots in the Snapshot dialog.)
