ability to access mobile devices
in win exp. I can browse the smart phone I've attached via USB, XE does not recognize such devices.

Re: ability to access mobile devices
I think it's a device with MTP (Media Transfer Protocol):

Re: ability to access mobile devices
from a users perspective I don't care which protocol might be used behind the scenes but I care when I cannot access a smart phone and other devices in XE.
PS: works fine in other FM e.g. Xplorer^2

Re: ability to access mobile devices
Information why this couldn't be implemented in the old version.

BTW it works partially in FC XE.
Edit: OK, so are you using XE already?? Strange, which smartphone are you using?
Moved to Beta discussion.

Re: ability to access mobile devices
Dreamer, I don't understand how it's supposed to "partly" work on your side.
the issue(s) is pretty simple:
first, connect your smart phone (no matter which brand) via USB to your PC.
now you most likely will be able to access it in Win Explorer or as mentioned in some other FM but XE.
second, connect your older phone via bluetooth, you might need to install a driver, but again it will be available in WinExplorer but you will run out of luck with XE.
I don't get it, why some FM have implemented such functionality while other still lack it!
this is crucial! I understand there could be some limitations or restrictions but at least a simple file browsing and copy should be possible in XE whenever whatever device is alredy accessible in WinEplorer.

Well, that's why FC-XE is still in beta. We submit our requests and suggestions, and Marek does what he can do in the time he has available (which, we will all agree, is highly impressive!) Development takes time.inglorious wrote:... I don't get it, why some FM have implemented such functionality while other still lack it!
You are comparing FC to Xplorer^2 which is not a beta release, nor a freeware "spare time" project either. Conversely, we might ask why another FM doesn't have some of the features of FC. Or we could look at FC a month or a year ago and ask why it didn't have features that it has today.

Re: ability to access mobile devices
Scott_Y do you consider 2009.02b beta? It's not working there either!
for improvement sake, you need to compare any FM software (no matter in what state)
to Windows Explorer and other commercial FM software!
if freeware sucks no one will ever use it, even though it may be free!
as an explorer replacement XE should have the same functionality as WinExplorer plus something more!

Re: ability to access mobile devices
Strange, when I connect my smartphone with my PC (via USB), I can see and access the internal memory card as well as the extra sd-card without any problem. They are accessible as drives and it works very well. I'm using FC-XE 0.0.0.598 with ancient Windows XP SP3...
I say, what a day...
Re: ability to access mobile devices
This depends on the protocol your smartphone is using. Some are connected as USB-devices, some as MTP-devices.Ernie5335 wrote:Strange, when I connect my smartphone with my PC (via USB), I can see and access the internal memory card as well as the extra sd-card without any problem. ...
This means "all his smartphones can't be displayed in FC"Inglorious wrote:connect your smart phone (no matter which brand) via USB to your PC....
not "all smartphones can't be displayed in FC".

It's not that simple...inglorious wrote:Dreamer, I don't understand how it's supposed to "partly" work on your side.
the issue(s) is pretty simple:
...
1. Why your smartphone doesn't support USB mass storage?
2. Please read my previous post again - and the topic with some explanations.
3. Why I said "partially" - that's because some features like drag & drop are not implemented yet, but basic operations like "simple file browsing and copy" ARE implemented in the latest XE version.
4. It works with all my MTP devices and it should work with all MTP devices, that's why I said "strange".
5. FC XE is not even "beta", the version you're using is the "Preview of the next version", if you want to help the developer, please provide more information, otherwise wait for the final version.
Re: ability to access mobile devices
No, 2009x is not beta -- but it is three years old. I wouldn't expect an older version to be more capable than a newer one, especially with that much time between them.inglorious wrote:Scott_Y do you consider 2009.02b beta? It's not working there either!

I agree that the capabilities of other FMs may indicate what is possible, and it is certainly reasonable to then request a feature to be added to FC. But the beta status must also be taken into account: it means the developer is not finished with it yet. In that sense a released software and a beta software are not entirely comparable.
If you have any experience with FC over time you know that it is continually improving, so the chances of getting what you need are pretty good. Of course if you can't wait, you can use another FM as you see fit.

Re: ability to access mobile devices
Yes, but from a beta tester's perspective (and you are beta testing, right?), it is significant to identify MTP as the underlying difficulty. If you read some of the other posts on the subject, it may help answer your questions about the current version of FC not having solved it completely.inglorious wrote:from a users perspective I don't care which protocol might be used behind the scenes but I care when I cannot access a smart phone and other devices in XE.
Re: ability to access mobile devices
Tip: MTP devices (e.g. some cameras and media players) are not assigned a drive letter by Windows, so they do not appear in the FC drive bar. To see a MTP device in FC-XE or Windows Explorer, you need to start from the "Computer" level somewhere. In FC-XE for example, start from a folder Tree with Basefolder set to either Desktop or Computer, or via the Computer button on the toolbar. See here for a bit more detail viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3820#p11272
