Folder synchronization

#1 Post by petar_1970 » 08.10.2012, 22:49

Hi Marek,

I'm software developer and I'm big fan of Total Commander for more than 10 years.
Unfortunately (or fortunately :-)) Total Commander is on the black list in my new company (since it is not free).
Because of that, I'm looking for an alternative.
Two days ago, I installed Free Commander XE (601), I have checked almost all its functionality and I'm thrilled! :-)
Almost in all segments Free Commander is better than Total Commander. I liked very much internal viewer, search options like "append to found items", the concept of the file filters and many others. Also, FC is much more customizable than TC. You did excellent job!

Some of the features that I use more often are folder synchronization and compare files. I saw that you are planned the implementation of folder synchronization and I'm curious when it will be finished?
I also tested WinMerge, but in my opinion Total Commander compares files by content much better (not on the word level, but on the character level).
Do you plan to integrate TC like files comparator?

Thank you again for the most powerful file manager on the world!

Compare files works only if you have defined an external program for comparing: Settings->Programs->Compare files
Try PSPad for that http://www.pspad.com/
Program: c:\Program Files\PSPad editor\PSPad.exe
Parameters: -D %FileCompare1% %FileCompare2%
It compares files by content much better than Total Commander

Hi Timon,
Thank you very much for you response, I'm always willing to find good tools and to speed up and improve my everyday work.
I have installed PSPad and tried to compare files, but still I think that Total Commander's comparator is more useful.
In the Total Commander, I can see exactly which characters are different, while in the PSPad I can only see in which line are differences (maybe I'm wrong and maybe this is only misconfiguration in PSPad, so if you know how to configure it, please inform me)

Please see scrinshots:

You are not right. You can see exactly which characters are different in PSPad. Configuration by default. The only thing you have to do is to get up to the desired line and at the bottom you'll see per-character comparison.

Thanks Timon, I can see it now :-)
I agree that PSPad is more useful than WinMerge and for now it will be my default comparator in FreeCommander, but I really hope that Marek can do it better ;-)

does 'Compare files' work on your FC XE601?

it always tells me to define an external programme; I re-checked and found that I had defined PSPad

Compare files with PSPad works fine in 601 version.
Check: Settings->Programs->Compare files
Program: c:\Program Files\PSPad editor\PSPad.exe (or where you installed program)
Parameters: -D %FileCompare1% %FileCompare2%

it magically works now - I can use PSPad.exe as well as WinMerge.exe now! :P

I took an old Freecommander.ini (from .570) and everything was o.k. :?:

Is folder sync not activated in the current version of XE or am I missing something?
Thx.

I missed that feature but somebody here recommended FreeFileSync which is a handy application for synchronizing. But I am looking forward to use Freecommander when this feature is implemented, because I can do all with one tool.

@petar_1970: the company could donate some $ for Marek, when finally using Freecommander... ;-)
