FC Won't Start

#1 Post by BGM » 11.06.2012, 16:39

Salvete! Last night I closed my open programs and shut down my computer. This morning I turned the computer on and once it was ready, I launched Firefox, Thunderbird, and after they were ready, I launched FCXE.

The process starts for FCXE, but the program never starts. So I kill the program and try again. It just won't load.

This happened in a similar manner once before, and it was due to having certain UNC paths open in the folder panels when FC was closed.

But now I can't get it to open at all. I even tried removing all the tab entries (except one for each panel), but that didn't help.

I even restored the backup FreeCommander.ini made by FCXE from 3 days ago.
If I start with no FreeCommander.ini, it starts.

I even restored a backup of the entire FCXE folder from a week ago, and that copy of FC wouldn't start either.

Hmmm.... Okay, I found the culprit. This time it isn't the UNC paths (if, indeed that was the issue last time - however the fix worked last time and not this time...). I left the entire Freecommander.ini just as I left it when I last shut down FC.

In Freecommander.ini,

[Form]
OneInstance=1

when I set it to 0, it starts.

But there is no prior instance of FC running at all! I have checked in both System Explorer and Task Manager for both application windows and processes.
Could something else be using the same signal that FC uses to see if it has a prior instance running?

FC 596.

Okay, I am having this problem again. I changed my domain-account password and restarted my computer, now FC won't work. I waited for it for several minutes with nothing but a white screen and a title bar reading, "Not Responding". The toolbar area was partially visible, then it disappeared completely. Finally I had to end task.

First I tried removing all paths that led to network directories from my freecommander.ini, but that didn't help.
So I tried removing FreeCommander.fav.xml, and that didn't help either.

So I restored my backup settings from 3 days ago to no avail.
Then I restored the backup settings from 6 days ago to no avail.
So I removed freecommander.ini, and FC would then start.

What do I do to get my settings back in order?

Ah! found the culprit! FreeCommander.fav.ini When I removed this, FC started up like a charm.

HA! I think I solved this one!

I figured that FC was trying to extract icons for the toolbars from network locations that had not been authenticated.

So I went through freecommander.fav.ini
and everywhere there was a network location,
I edited
IconNr=-1
IconFile=

to be

IconNr=60
IconFile=%toolbaricons%

where %toolbaricons% points to my own icon library (*.icl)

After that, FC started up like it ought to!

I don't mind sharing it at all, but I can't do it publicly because it breaks every copyright in the world. PM me, and I'll give you a link.

597 - The one instance thing is still a problem! I had set it to single-instance in 596, and just upgraded to 597 and I could not restart FC. So I changed
[Form]
OneInstance=1

back to 0 and it started fine.

Maybe it is a combination of settings?

If I start it with OneInstance=0, then I can change it in the settings panel, and the function works. But if it is 1 when FC starts up, the FC process starts and gets hung up - the window never loads, and FC just hangs there in process memory until I kill it.

Version 0.599

Marek, I am still having this problem. It has been consistent in every version now for about 10 versions.
In Freecommander.ini,

[Form]
OneInstance=1

when I set it to 0, it starts.

But there is no prior instance of FC running at all! I have checked in both System Explorer and Task Manager for both application windows and processes.

Marek, I am still having this problem.
I know, we had the same problem in FcContextMenu64 on your PC. Now FcContextMenu64 works right, yes?
I need to apply the same solution for FC now. I will make it for the next release.

But how is my PC different than any other? What was causing the issue with the context menu? Yes, the context menu works perfectly now. I even see the icon in the system tray. Could it be a combination of settings?

I have the same problem now (2015/08). When clicking on the icon I get a blimp and nothing. I used FC-XE on Win 7 for a long time without problem. I uninstalled, reinstalled, same problem. What can I do?
Help please.
Peter
