597 - Context Menu doesn't time out

#1 Post by BGM » 26.07.2012, 18:53

Oh, I'm having context menu issues again. I click on a file and the menu doesn't open - I get the spinner icon and then it waits and doesn't do anything. But I posted about that here: http://forum.freecommander.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4250

However, I have a secondary problem. After I wait for the menu and the spinner stops, and nothing happens, I start to do another task. Then the menu appears! It won't go away unless I select one of the items in the menu, which I don't want to do. In fact, it is there, open, right now, even as I type here in this webpage control.

It remains there, hanging in the air even if I click around in FC.

I CAN get rid of it by right-clicking on the menu (which doesn't call its actions) and then clicking out.

The whole thing is intermittent and I can't get a method of reproduction. But it happens *very* often.

I agree with everything BGM reports here, except that the frequency for me is "occasional" (~10% of the time??) rather than "very often." (597)

now that's an old hat! what do you think is the purpose of an additional application (apparently written in .NET  )
to handle the context menu? borland/imprise/embarcadero did not manage to release a 64-bit version for ages!
I stopped complaining as I don't expect a prompt solution, when ever possible use the menu instead.

inglorious, what do you mean by "Use the menu, instead"?

most commands can be accessed also from the file menu/short cuts, as the context menu application is mostly useless/not working/crashing/hanging under 64 bit:

Oh, THAT menu! Yes, but I like to use 7zip, File-Menu Tools and other things in my context menu. In my opinion, using the menu bar menus is not a viable workaround. I prefer 7-zip to the built-in packer because it is popupless and automatically names my files. Also, with 7-zip, you can OPEN nearly anything - for example docx files, xpi files, tar, rar, and even some exe files. FC will do some if you adjust the settings, but not all. Besides, I would rather not make FC think those files are archives because I want the normal file-action to work for them.

In short, I like the context menu and just wish it would work *all* the time. I will suffer with it until Marek can fix it.

I stumbled upon open++ recently, you can add "anything" with that to your context menu:

give it a try and let me know what you think, I've tested it in a VM, looks pretty promising to me.
