Default keyboard shortcuts changes

#1 Post by Dreamer » 17.04.2010, 02:04

Here are few suggestions for changes in default keyboard shortcuts. I don't want to change default hotkeys like F5, in Windows used to refresh, because these are used in all file managers, but some shortcuts might be changed.

1. Alt+F7 > Ctrl+F (Search)
2. F8 > Delete (Delete)
3. Shift+Ctrl+N > F8 (new text file, F7 is New folder)
4. ? > F9 (Toggle view)
5. ? > F10 (Looks free, any suggestions? perhaps Flat view?)

Perhaps also these... (dis)connect network drive is not often used by normal users

6. F11, F12 > Ctrl+F11, Ctrl+F12 ((Dis)connect network drive)
7. F11 (Toggle maximize main window, F11 is a standard for toggle fullscreen)
8. F12 (Settings)

What do you think? You can just vote (1 yes, 2 no ...) or say your opinion, or add your suggestions (use the next numbers 9+). Thanks.

Ctrl+F is still not a default shortcut for "Search"? I really think this should be changed.

F8 is quite danger too - I'm not using dialog for delete and I use "new file" for F8, so I have almost deleted a large folder by mistake (I'm using recycle bin). I think F8 is danger also because some users don't use it, it's near the F7 key for a new folder. Every keyboard has a special key for delete - Delete. Why we need two?

I agree strongly with both suggested changes.

Alt+F7 is the strangest shortcut in FC. Ctl+F is standard for "Find" (= Search) in many programs. When I first started using FC, I customized my Search shortcut accordingly. But then when I worked with FC installed on other people's computers, I was continually turning on the filter (default Ctl+F) by mistake (surprise!) when I intended to Search. Eventually I reverted to the default Alt+F7 for Search on my computer too. But that feels rather strange.

CTRL+F is the first thing I change whenever I need to reset my settings, so I agree on that.
most of the other shortcuts are derived from NC, the first 2 panel FM and probably the one only useful application from peter norton. warning: don't install anything from norton, but for the exception you wish to slow down your pc!
besided of CTRL+F (I dunno what ever happend to set such important shortcut to ALT+F7, even SC is misbehaving this way) I personally don't see any reason to change the default settings (because of NC inheritance!) but feel free to set them to your linking.

What could be the alternative for the current Ctrl+F (Filter) - Alt+I, Alt+L?

Hey! I agree with the ctrl+f for Find! That one ALWAYS gets me!

I never use any of the NC settings, so I, personally don't care about their hotkeys.

Otherwise, I agree with all of Dreamers suggestions.

I'm generally reluctant to suggest changes to established shortcuts because other users have memorized them. However, Dreamer has pointed out the potential danger of F8 as a deletion shortcut. Because the Delete key already has that function anyway, I suggest the following reassignments:

--- Filter set ---
F8 = Filter (replacing Ctrl+F)
Ctrl+F8 = Quick filter on (replacing Ctrl+Y)
Alt+F8 = Quick filter off (replacing Alt+Y)

--- Deletion set (already standard in Windows Explorer) ---
Delete = Delete (replacing F8)
Sh+Delete = Delete permanently (replacing Sh+F8)

Perhaps Ctrl+Sh+Delete = Wipe can replace the current Ctrl+Sh+F8.

I don't have a problem with the current Quick filter shortcuts, but moving them as suggested above would have the advantage of grouping the filter functions together.

i'm into that. filter is probably not used as often anyway because of the quickfilter funcionality at least I never use it.

BTW, CTRL+F has ALWAYS been a standard for searching in Windows Explorer, Office and all windows compliant applications!!!

Hm.. Since the "Y" is used for quick filter, I have 2 suggestions:

Use a signle shortcut Ctrl+Y to enable/disable quick filter (currently 2 shortcuts are used, Ctrl+Y and Alt+Y). Then use Alt+Y for Filter.

If not possible, then perhaps Alt+I.

Toggle by a single key combination is always good for on/off functions. So I support Dreamer's suggestion.

that's true!
not to mention that this functionality has been requested already many times e.g. here

as this is about shortcuts:

I often toggle single/dual panel atm this is set to CTRL+SHIFT+F1
I would not mind if you would change that to something more practicable,
as it's inconvenient having to press 3 buttons at a time.

As has been noted above, F8 is currently redundant with Delete. So F8 could be reassigned -- preferably to a frequently-used function. Perhaps the single/dual pane toggle?

Right, but single/dual pane option is not for everyone, just some users are using single pane view, so the default option for F8 should be something for everyone, so do you have any suggestions except "New file"?
