Can't edit selected file after typing the file name

#1 Post by budokaiman » 14.11.2016, 20:05

Explanation that is far better than the confusing title:
When I start typing a file's name to select it (if I have a bunch of files and I type "foo" to select "foo.txt") I try to edit the file by pressing F4 key (also tried F3) but nothing happens. If I click on the file and press F4 it opens in the editor as it should. This is with Build 730 Portable 32-bit on 64-bit Win7 machine.

if you go to a file via keyboard you open the 'Quick search field' at the bottom of the active pane.
as long as the quick search field is open/active FCXE does not accept keyboard shortcuts.
so you have to wait until it closes (you can adjust the auto close time in the settings).

is it a bug? I'm not sure.
but this behavior IMO is not very intuitive and it should be re-worked.

Checked and when using typing to select a file it seems to block a number of features in Free Commander e.g. cannot

1) Use any keyboard shortcuts e.g. F4 for edit, or Ctrl/F for find

2) Nothing happens when you select anything under the Tools menu e.g. Settings, Connect to network drive etc.

3) Favourites as a custom toolbar item (reported this elsewhere before but I "found" the Favourites menu option worked so have been using that instead).

There may be other features effected, haven't checked everything.

It is a bug, because this functionality did work before I upgraded to 730 (not sure exactly which build broke it, but I see it still working in build 675 that I have on another PC).

It works for me right all the time. Simply set the option "Quick search field auto close time" to 1, otherwise you can close the quick search field with ESC.

That doesn't really solve the problem though. I don't always type exactly what I want in 1 second. There are many times where I type part of a file name and will continue to refine it until I get to the file I need. With the quick search set to auto-close I can't do this.

Same as budokaiman, I really like the fact it does not time out.

It's not the end of the world as you can press Escape & then the "disabled" features work but IMHO this is a bug.

Actually any function or control key operation including for example Ctrl/C or Ctrl/V for copy and paste are "blocked" when the quick select is active so it makes it a lot more annoying (for me at least) bug. Still can press Escape to the get out of this mode so it's not end of world.

Marek, any chance of getting this acknowledged as a bug and some sort of estimate of when a fix might be coming ?

731 seems to fix this but it crashes too often for me. Have created a but report for this.

Rolled back 1 version at a time until I found the most recent version where it is not present, 726, so am using that for now.

Confirmed fixed in 732. Thanks.
