Donor here, question about Virus alerts with the Donor build

#1 Post by rakers8 » 14.08.2016, 08:20

I've searched the forums and can't seem to find any conclusive peace of mind. Obviously I like the program enough to "trust" it (because I purchased two lifetime licenses). But, why are these donor builds getting detected as malware? What is different about freecommander VS other competitors that don't trip the A/Vs? When I installed the most recent build (727), several scanners I've tried with the freecommander.exe causes them to go batty. Further, after "restoring" the file with my active, resident malware scanner (Zemana) and telling it to trust the freecommander exe file, it THEN finds a plagued file in the temp directory created by FreeCommander called "getTab.vbs". I want to emphasize that I'm not just slinging blame and hate at Marek, but I would appreciate a response as to why this happens and also why we shouldn't worry about it (rather than just "report it to them, it's safe".)

From the outside looking in, I don't know if maybe the server got hacked, some kind of hijack taking place, etc etc. Hell, if malware can sneak by Microsoft in Windows Update, I imagine it can happen to anyone regardless of the intentions.

FreeCommander is my favorite alternate file-explorer for windows and would love to get these straightened out.

Thanks.

I hope, the cause is not a FreeCommander.
Please check the report on Virustotal.

I have just downloaded Build 716 and Free Panda AV does not report it as a problem. Seems like the problem is in Trend AV software at first glance.

I just downloaded FreeCommanderXE-64-donor_setup727;zip. When I extract the exe Norton Anti-Virus says the file is dangerous and deletes it.

The VirusTotal report is on the portable version, not the 64-bit setup version.

SOME SECURITY COMPANIES ARE JUST INCOMPETENT! AND GUESS WHAT: THEIR PRODUCTS SUCK!
E.g.: https://www.engadget.com/2016/06/29/goo ... s-it-gets/

And why complain that it isn't the result for the setup version instead of simply checking for yourself?
Here, I did it for you: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/5e8a ... 471240047/

I suspect that most people would not make any sense of that 2nd link.

Zemana was reporting it for me - multiple files, not just the exe. Then I tried Virustotal, Jotti, and some others.

I was not complaining, merely asking for an explanation as to why it happens by someone that knows more about it than me. If you had read my entire post instead of just the title you would know that I mentioned multiple files (freecommander.exe & gettab.vbs created by freecommander in the windows temp directory) being flagged. Portable or not, it doesn't matter in this context. Not only was I looking for a technical reason as to why but also simply giving Marek a heads-up of what's happening. Why are you so sensitive about it anyway? Relax.

Anyway, thanks for continuing to work on this - I'll support it indefinitely and look forward to more updates!
