716 - Auto backup of settings does not function as expected

#1 Post by candomez » 02.11.2017, 03:28

FC: XE 2016 Build 716 64-bit donor portable
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64

(Note: I stopped upgrading at version 716 due to intermittent corruption of INI files in subsequent versions, affecting: FreeCommander.ini on three different systems, and FreeCommander.hist.ini on two different systems.)

Auto backup of settings does not function as expected:
1. Daily backups don't happen daily.
2. The max count of backups isn't honored.

Really, just me?

Can someone else at least check their backups directory to verify that FC is performing a backup every day, and that FC prunes old backups per the number you have set under Settings > General > Auto backup.

Thanks.

Sorry but currently we are at version 762
Why should one test anything on old version.
Never had any ini file corruption with any FC version on Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10.

Try to start FC with another ini for testing and see how it behaves.

It doesn't matter what version you're using if the bug was never fixed - it would just get carried forward in each subsequent version...
I've already tried upgrading to newer versions. And I read the change log for every version that comes out, but there's been no mention of this bug.

Did you even check your backups directory?

So that's a confirmation of the bug - it's clear from your screen shot that FC is not performing a daily backup.

I can't confirm this bug, last 15 backups are from FC_Bak_Settings_2017-10-26 00-11-37 to FC_Bak_Settings_2017-11-09 00-17-11, one backup per day.

FC 762 64-bit donor, Windows 10 64-bit.

Is FC installed to the default directory, or are you using the portable version?
Is it on a laptop that goes to sleep when not in use?

Not that either of those should necessarily matter - I'm just looking for a pattern in why it affects some users but not others.

The problem may be - you never shut down the program.
Currently only on program start will be checked if backup is needed.

No, you are wrong - I just start FC from time to time.

Then why are you responding to this thread if it doesn't affect you?
You should have said up front that you only use it intermittently, instead of providing a screen shot and leaving it open to interpretation...

Yes, then that's the problem. Because I don't shut down FC if I have no reason to.
And I believe it's fair to say that I shouldn't have expected that I'd have to restart the program to kick off a backup.
So is that something you'd consider addressing in a future version?

Also, what is causing FC to disregard the max backup count I have set?

It could be hard to auto-backup settings without a scheduler - you can try to use Windows scheduler to close/re-open FC.

If you never exit FC, settings are not saved either, so it's not safe, if the Windows crash etc. It's not just FC, you may lose settings also from other programs.

You are wrong again. Yes, I start file manager from time to time, but I can start it 10 times in 1 day. But I don't see different backups made in 1 day. So it affects me too.
