Opening multiple files concomitantly - Behavior

#1 Post by pstrg » 25.06.2020, 00:09

It seems the following is not explained in the FAQ.

My music files are registered with foobar2000.
I very often select a number of music files on a folder an hit Enter.

Windows Explorer behavior
foobar2000 is invoked; all files appear in sequence in the playlist and the first one starts playing.

FreeCommander behavior
foobar2000 is invoked; it's possible to note that each file is briefly displayed in sequence on a single line of the foobar2000 playlist - the last one (the only one that remains) starts playing.

Is it possible to emulate Explorer behavior in this case?

I tested with default settings, both programs latest stable versions and it works good, try to upgrade to latest versions.

Windows 10 Pro 1909
FreeCommander XE 2020 Build 810a 64-bit donor
foobar2000 1.54 (upgraded from 1.53)

Tested again - same result: only the last file on a FreeCommander list remains on foobar2000 playlist.

Are you sure about the FC version? If you are a donor, upgrade to 822 64-bit donor, if not, use the version 810a 32-bit public.

I'm not sure, but it's probably some option in foobar2000, try these:

Preferences > Shell Integration:
Sort incoming files by:

Code: Select all

%path_sort%
Restrict incoming files to:

Code: Select all

*
Exclude file types:

Code: Select all

*.CUE

My foobar2000 setting (a program with which I'm familiar with) is the same you suggested.
Note that Windows Explorer opens multiple files in foobar2000 as usual.
The one and only setting I changed in FreeCommander was the one you suggested for the rename dialog.

How to get 822 64-bit? Hitting download on the changes window after "Check for updates" do not led to a link.
Looked around the site and could not find it either.

FAQ – FreeCommander - How can I test the donor beta version, or/and the 64-bit version?

Anyway, it works good here, also with the 32-bit version - 810a public, strange, I don't know where is the problem. Is your Windows 64-bit?

EDIT: What about file names - any special characters, non-English, diacritical marks?

64 bit, yes.

Certainly. In fact, I don't know about any language other than English that doesn't have diacritical marks...

Given the clue, I tested with a list of files which had no diacritical marks and it worked as expected.
It seems that FreeCommander really gets confused if filenames contain diacritical marks.
But such file names are legal for Windows - shouldn't that be considered a bug?

OK, I tested with the files with diacritical marks, FC 822 64-bit donor, FC 810a 32-bit public, AIMP, foobar200 (latest versions), everything work good.

Perhaps the example with the exact file name could help, so I could test the same files, at least 2 examples.

Or try this test, rename 2 mp3 files like this:
1ĽŠČŤŽÝÁÍÉÚÄÔŇÓĎĹŔŘŮ.mp3
2ľščťžýáíéúäôňóďĺŕřů.mp3

It works good here, FC/foobar2000/AIMP.

Copied some files to a new folder and renamed them to your hardcore diacritical names - it worked.
Back to their original folders, it did not work.
Some guessing and trial and error led me to this:

- original path: M:\MUSICm\&\D\Debussy=Le martyre de Saint Sébastien ~Luxembourg; Krivine
- new path: M:\MUSICm\a\D\Debussy=Le martyre de Saint Sébastien ~Luxembourg; Krivine

It thus follows that changing part of the path from "&" to "a" made it all work right.
Why?

I tried the same file name, similar path with the same folder "&" and it works good here.

Since we both are using the same FC and foobar2000 versions and same file names, perhaps it's a Windows bug, which was fixed in 2004 update? (I have Windows 10 2004 64-bit)
Or it could be different Region settings in Control panel, Region > Administrative tab > Language for non-Unicode programs.

Perhaps someone else could test it...

Just for the record - main language is English (UK) but non-unicode language is English (US); it's intentional in order to avoid problems.

Really doubt it could be a Windows bug - note that Explorer works right with either "&" or "a".
Will test tomorrow on a 2004 machine anyway.

Another computer on the same network
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit 2004
FC 810a 32-bit public
foobar2000 1.54

Accessed M:\MUSICm\a\D\Debussy=Le martyre de Saint Sébastien ~Luxembourg; Krivine
as a network path with Explorer; all 18 files displayed on foobar2000, 1st one started playing.
Changed \a\ to \&\ - no problem.

Accessed M:\MUSICm\a\D\Debussy=Le martyre de Saint Sébastien ~Luxembourg; Krivine
as a network path with FC; names of files appeared briefly on a single line on foobar2000 playlist,
only one started playing.
Tried again, same behavior, but _another_ file started playing.
It seems that if files are not local, only one of them is chosen, but at random.

Since it already failed with \a\ within the path, didn't try to change to \&\ this time.

Looks like the problem is a bit trickier than it looked to be at first.
I can't imagine what may be "anormal" about my computers and network; curious that things do work at your site.

Now you said you are testing 18 files, it's a known issue, reported here:

796 - Opening multiple files at once - FreeCommander Forum

There's a reply from Marek, but perhaps it was changed in Windows now and it could be fixed.

I can reproduce the issue if 16+ files are opened in FC, also in AIMP, no problem with 15 or less.

In Explorer I tested 101 files to AIMP, no problem, all were added to playlist as 101 items.

BTW Workarounds:

- drag&drop items
- right click and select "Open with ..."
- Settings F12 > Programs > Viewers > create new item for *.mp3 (and others, if needed), path for foobar2000 (or another program), %ActivSel% as Parameters, then just select files and press F3, tested with 128 files
- it should work the same with "Editors" tab, F4
- I tied also "Default action" tab, same way, but it works just for a single file, possibly a bug, reported in another topic

- drag&drop items
Did not try - don't like this way.

- right click and select "Open with ..."
Strangely, "Open with ..." doesn't appear in context menu.

- Settings F12 > Programs > Viewers > create new item for *.mp3 (and others, if needed), path for foobar2000 (or another program), %ActivSel% as Parameters, then just select files and press F3, tested with 128 files
Worked (with F3 as directed, not with Enter).

- it should work the same with "Editors" tab, F4
(Disabled former Viewers setting before testing).
Did not work. After hitting F3 a new FC window opened instead:

Just a comment: before checking email I installed Q-Dir and note that it isn't affected by this issue.
