Error - "address is not valid" in help file on all

#1 Post by dma44 » 30.10.2008, 17:28

Hello,

I think this is a great program and am so grateful to those who worked on creating and sharing it.

I updated to 2008.06c and updated the help files (english), and now I am getting "address is not valid" on ALL the links in the help file (which was working before). Since I only tried to access the help file recently, I don't know if the error has anything to do with the updates.

Paths Info says:

Freecommander.ini
C:\Program Files\FreeCommander\FreeCommander.ini

Application Data:
C:\Program Files\FreeCommander

Do you have any suggestions of what I can try? I tried redoing the update for the program as well as the help file, but that didn't fix it.

Thanks so much!

No problem here, do you have the file FreeCommander.chm in the FreeCommander folder?

HHReg fixes FC help file "addr not valid" error

#5 Post by dma44 » 01.11.2008, 15:25

Ralfso,

Thank you so much for the link to the free utility HHReg.
It fixed my problem!
My FC help file used to work before... Sounds like one of the internet explorer updates caused it to go. But HHReg fixed it.

If others have this same help file problem, just download this utility, and add the help file by pointing to its location (C:\program files\freecommander\FreeCommander.chm).

Thank you so much.

Perhaps this should become be available publicly?
HHReg utility fixes "address not valid" errors in help files

HHReg v1.2 - HTML Help Registration Utility
http://www.ec-software.com/products_hhreg.html

HHReg is a utility to register HTML Help (.chm) files on an individual Windows computer to make them available for viewing. Registration for HTML Help files is required since Microsoft issued a security patch for Microsoft Internet Explorer, disabling in general all HTML Help files that are viewed from a network drive.

HHReg removes this limitation by explicitly registering HTML Help CHM files in the Windows registry, making them available for viewing even when opened on network drives.

January 11, 2008: Updated version 1.2 available!

HHReg v1.2 is now available in English and German. The exe file contains localized strings for both languages.

Windows Vista: If you are running HHReg on Windows Vista, make sure you download the latest version, since older versions of HHReg might not work on Vista!

HTML Help files blocked over the network
With the above patch installed, HTML Help files over the network are blocked by default. When the help file opens, you may happen to see the following error message (click on the image to expand):

Action canceled! The HTML Help viewer has canceled the display of the help file due to security restrictions. This will happen with all HTML Help files that you open over a network connection (note, that local HTML Help files will not be affected).

This used to work before! Why doesn´t it anymore?
The reason for this error is a new and more strict security policy for Microsoft Internet Explorer. Microsoft is permanently updating MSIE to fix potential or real security threats. In case of this error, the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-026 disables HTML Help files opened from a network drive. (Learn more about the security threat in the Microsoft Knowledgebase Article KB896358.)

How to fix it?
There are several ways to fix this problem. The first (and this is the way recommended by Microsoft) is: put the CHM files onto the local harddrive. Files viewed from local drives are not affected.

If this is not possible or not desirable, you can explicitly register individual help files and folders to allow viewing them over the network or edit the Windows registry to make the security settings less strict in general. Microsoft describes the necessary steps in detail in this knowledgebase article KB 896054.

HHReg helps you with the registry editing task. Modifying the Windows registry is tedious and error-prone. HHReg provides a simple user interface to view and modify the list of registered HTML Help files and folders.

You can register your individual .CHM files or the folders containing your .CHM files.
This does not compromise security since the registration is only applied for the specific folders and/or files you select.

Please contact your system administrator first! All registry modifications require administrator rights on your PC, whether you do it manually or with HHReg.

Download HHReg:
HHReg is a small and self-contained tool, just one EXE file in a zip archive. It runs right out of the box and does not require installation. E.g. you can run it from a CD Rom or from a server location to perform automated batch registrations of help files on multiple client PCs.

HHReg is free for private and commercial use.
This utility is provided by EC Software GmbH, the makers of Help & Manual.
