Address bar drive button(s)

#1 Post by Dreamer » 02.11.2007, 23:33

Add the Drive button(s) to the address bar, the same as copy, root, go up buttons on the right, just on the left:

+ Option to disable "drives bar" completely

+ Perhaps add also free disk space to address bar
E.g.: [ ] C:\Program Files\... 11.93GB [/] [..]

Example from other file manager:

In FC it might be looking like this:

I use a combo box view and it looks so... ugly. This little button would be much better.

Thank you.

I totally agree with this...combining the address bar with a drive drop down box.

Yes, this would be very nice.
Another improvement would be, in my opinion to add a favorites "button" in the group with "copy full path as text", "root" and "go up" (for each pane).
The reason being that the favorites should be easier to reach (even without the need for a toolbar).

Great job until now!

I too would like the ability to completely hide the drives bar. I like minimal interfaces and am trying to get FC with only the status bar and menu.

Thanks!

Right, it would make commander more lucid.

I would only partially agree with this.

I agree the removal of the drive bar would be a good thing however putting it on the address bar would leave little room for the address information itself (especially when like me you have 4 or 5 drives).

I think a better solution would be to incorporate it into the top of the tree window and allow it to consume multiple rows dependant on the number of drives/width of window.

No no, I don't want to move the drive bar with all drives (I have 10 except USB devices  ). I can't see the screenhots in the first post, so I'll try to upload it again. I'll try to explain what I want here:

I don't want this:

[ [] C ] [ [] D ] [ [] E ] [ [] F ] [ [] G ] C:\Program Files... [] [] []

I want just a small button on the left like the current combo box option:

[] C:\Program Files... [] [] []

Edit: OK, I have updated the first post, hope it's clear enough now. :)

BTW Completely customizable / dockable drive bar would be also nice, of course with option to disable it completely.

Dreamer

Now that I have seen what you mean, I fully support your request. That is a much neater method of drive selection than what I was proposing. :D

I support the idea of a drives button opening a drives dropdown menu. I know it from file manager "explorer2". There it is a single button in a toolbar but it really doesn't matter to me where it appears.

At any rate I'd like to remove the drives bar.

I find the drives bar very useful. I have seven drives and if flash drives are in use this can become ten. To use a dropdown menu for this would need two mouse clicks instead of one each time one needs to change to another drive.

Perhaps an option to change the size of these buttons independently of the size of the toobar buttons would be a solution to saving screen space?

As also would be an option to show the drives either as a dropdown or as a drives bar according to preference.

As I have suggested in another post, easier access to the favorites would also be very helpful.

Combo box / drop-down menu might need just one 'click' too - it's working this way in another program, just click and hold mouse button, drag to a desired drive and release the mouse button - this is very quick and it's better than drive bar (IMHO) because you can see the drive name and free space, so it's sometimes much quicker than drive bar, which might be very confusing if there are too many drives there.

It's quicker also when using shortcuts (Alt+F1/F2), because you can see the drive name.

I agree but the user should be able to chose between the actuel drive bar and the new one with a setting in the program options
