Good Day,

I would like to suggest the Option of disabling full row select.

Thank You,

You're welcome.

Perhaps it will be added in the next version.

It would be useful also for List view, I use often. In XP only the file was selected, in Vista it's the width of file with longest name in the folder - so there is almost no free space in the pane. For example:

FC in Win XP:

Code: Select all

[file1] *****************
[file2] *****************
[file3] *****************
[file with a long name] *
FC in Win Vista:

Code: Select all

[file1 ] *
[file2 ] *
[file3 ] *
[file with a long name] *
* = free space - it's relative, sometimes there is no free space at all (free space is also useful when selecting with mouse - not possible when using NC mode, but it's another issue...)

Well, I have already got it in Vista, all I did was stripped every single 'theme', 'visual', 'eye candies' off vista, which looks like old old Win95 now, and it doesn't have the 'row selection' annoyance anymore.

Method:

Tuneup Utilities (latest) to adjust visual performance to 'performance'. That's it. (I didn't adjust via 'My Computer>Properties>Performance>', so it is still showing 'let OS decide' selections.)

Cons:

No more nice visual from Vista. I think this tweak is not controlled by FC alone, it has to be dealing with Vista itself. Cheers. 8)

I do not seem to understand the purpose of NOT having a full row select.

Could you please explain to me what format that would take and what advantages it would offer?

Screen Shots / Examples would be nice.

Thanks

With full row select enabled it's not possible to:

- select the files using a mouse, in non-NC-mode
- drag the files to another panel, in list view
- right click to get the context menu options
- paste the file using the right click menu
- activate the other panel with the mouse without selecting another item, or de-selecting selected files

Perhaps I'd find more, if needed.

I'm confused and I'll do a point by point, maybe out of order, and try to express what I'm seeing and why I'm not understanding all of what was just said.

- I am in non-NC mode and can select files using the mouse without a problem. I just do a "rubber-band" selection.

- I can select and drag / drop files from the left pane (List View) to the right pane.

- I do get context menu options when I right click on selected files

- I can and do paste a file or groups of files using the right click menu

- I can and do activate the other panel with my mouse without losing my selection. I just click on the D:\ (I think it is the address bar just below the drive icon bar) and it works perfectly.

Please, I'd appreciate it if you could help me understand if I'm missing anything. I can do all the things you listed no sweat. I'm using version 375.

Hmm... Sometimes there is an empty space, but sometimes there is no empty space in the panel. It's not easy to explain, perhaps I'd have to create the screenshots, or even videos. Try to enter the folder with many files with long names in List view, in small window and then try to right click and paste, or drag and drop the file from other pane, for example. Or, perhaps you could believe in me. :)

Here is a screen shot:

Image

See the bar that says: "T:\Audio\Audiobooks"

That is where I click to change panes without losing the selection.

Normally though, I just press TAB

I hope that helps make that one clear, at least. I'll try to see if I can come up with further explanation and examples.

I truly am baffled about this "Row Selection" thing and really want to try to get a good understanding of it. Please have patience with me.

Thanks

Don't you think that's rather narrow?

Narrow? I don't understand what you mean by that. Could you explain in more detail please?

I click ANYWHERE on that green bar that has the T:\Audio\Audiobooks (for example - it could be whatever drive and folder you are in) and it switches focus to that pane without altering selections.

Left pane, right pane, it doesn't matter. It could be anything besides T:\Audio\Audiobooks, like these:

C:\
C:\Windows
D:\Backup\Microsoft Office 2000 Professional\Configuration Files
D:\Files\Mozilla
C:\Program Files\JASC\Paint Shop Pro 7\
D:\Games\Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth II Rise of the Witch King

Regardless of what is in that green line over each pane, all you have to do is click on that to get focus. All file selections are preserved.

It works for both panes and is very similar to just pressing TAB. It works like a charm, so I guess I don't get what the problem is.
