Splitter has cluttered descriptions and inconsistent approach to them

#1 Post by Forez » 21.01.2024, 12:17

The special action toolbar Splitter is inconsistent with info it presents to user

For example on Splitter when user hovers over the kb icon it says
Calculates the space occupied by folders (Alt+F9)
but when user navigates to its Define action toolbars then on the left side panel it will say
Folders by size
when hovered upon and it will also be named like so i.e.
Folders by size
plus at the bottom it will display
Folders by size ; Calculates the space occupied by folders (Alt+F9)
which apparently is a combo of its data from the Commands and the Description columns available in the main window of this
Define action toolbars window. But in case of e.g. Refresh when user hovers over it within the Define action toolbars window no info in form of a balloon will show up

Another inconsistency in regards to how much info is shown is in overall to the data contained in the Description column. For example if user will write

Code: Select all

container
in the Quick Filter box in order to find all Commands available for that feature then all of the results will be proceeded by
Tab container:
like for example
Tab container: Add items to container...;Adds items to container from other file container
and
Tab container: Remove from container;Removes selected items from the file container only
but with an exception of one - the
Open file container;Shows dialog for opening the file container
Plus as the above examples show, some Commands have 2 descriptions put in their Description field

And thus I propose:

#1] Either remove all balloons when hovering over Items when use does this in Define action toolbars window or supplement the missing one

Because info is also displayed at the bottom then it seem redundant to display it also when hovering - but on the other hand if user has not enough horizontal space then long names of Commands will be shown truncated [an thus a need for balloons is valid]

#2] Give user a choice if what is to be shown in balloons when hovering in the main window [i.e. directly over icons on Splitter and not within its options]

It should be up to user what elements are to be shown [thus make it also possible to use a combinations of them]:
● name from Commands column
● info from the Description column
● assigned keyboard shortcut [if it is set]

#3] Show assigned keyboard shortcut [if it is set] also in Define action toolbars window

If user is presented with that valuable piece of info when hovering over an icon on Splitter in the main window then it should also be displayed in the window where user is able to set than icon up for it

#4] Implement order and improve readability of data in the Description column

#4A] First of all: get rid of those excessive other descriptions as one is enough

#4B] Secondly: replace the sign of semicolon

Code: Select all

;
with something more graphical in order to make it stand out more, like for example some of those unusual signs:

Code: Select all

●
▶
▎
#4C] Thirdly: add white space where its due, as currently it is a total chaos with a lot of hard to read lack of them before and after many of semicolons

#5] Unify / correct the names of headers of columns

Currently we have Commands [plural] and Description [single] while in reality it is the opposite [as some positions have two descriptions] - but what I am proposing is to get rid of doppelgangers thus their names should read newly Command [single] and still Description [but have, as already proposed earlier. for all of them just 1 description instead of 2]

#6] Consider splitting current Quick Filter for two separates ones

Currently the box of Quick Filter filters records from both columns. Taking into account that every now and then a new Item[]b] is added to the available list of them, maybe it would be beneficial if users could decide if what they are looking for in a part of Command or of Description? This could be achieved either by adding second box [maybe on the far let side of that bar / line in which the current box is] or by making a toggle icon / tick box than would change behavior [targeted appliance] of the Quick Filter
